Tough
choices made to save Pakistan: PM;
The government has to take tough decisions to steer the country
out of crisis and into the right direction, Prime Minister Yousuf
Raza Gilani said. This he said after laying the foundation stone
of the Ministry of Science and Technology building, the Prime
Minister said a large number of people had initially opposed the
military operation in Swat and Malakand, but the government had
to take the hard path for the sake of the country’s survival.

China
can help Pakistan overcome power crises;
Huge prospects of trade and other mutual interests exist in Pakistan's
relations with China whereby China is invited to construct small
dams to help Pakistan overcome its troublesome power crises. This
was articulated by Federal Minister for Investment, Senator Waqar
Ahmed Khan, in his proposals to a 12 member-delegation of MCC
(China Metallurgical Group Corporation) headed by Dan Huang in
his chamber at Islamabad.

US
House approves $1.5 billion aid for Pakistan;
The US House of Representatives on Thursday approved a $48.8 billion
spending bill to bolster US foreign policy and aid efforts, including
to allies like Pakistan and Afghanistan. The legislation includes
$2.7 billion in foreign aid for Afghanistan and $1.5 billion for
Pakistan as they fight Taliban militants.

Pak
missions abroad can pave way for export of manpower;
The highest ever amount of over $7.811 billion as workers’ remittances
in 2008-09 fiscal year (FY09) which has assumed a major source
of external flows is likely to encourage export of manpower in
the coming years. The proceedings of workers from Pakistan calls
for easing the bureaucratic hurdles as well as support of Pakistan’s
foreign missions abroad to pave the way for manpower from Pakistan.
It may be recalled that the previous record of $6.451 billion
received in the preceding 2007-08 fiscal year (FY08).

Pakistan
to hold exhibition in Canada every year;
Trade Development Authority of Pakistan Chief Executive Syed Mohibullah
Shah has said Pakistan will hold a single country exhibition in
Canada every year. He said this in a meeting with the Deputy Minister
for International Trade and Investment, Ontario, Canada, Dr Bruce
A Archibald, during which they discussed means to strengthen and
expand bilateral trade between Pakistan and Canada.

Germany
keen to invest in renewable energy;
Germany Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr Michael Koch has expressed
the desire to invest in renewable energy power projects in Pakistan.
German companies are already working in the various water and
power sector projects and had also expertise in the renewable
energy projects. He has asked for details of the projects identified
for renewable energy in Pakistan. The German Envoy expressed these
views during a meeting with Federal Minister for Water and Power,
Raja Pervez Ashraf in the ministry.

Govt,
Engro Power ink Thar coal project MoU;
A joint venture is about to start between government and Engro
Power Gen Limited (EPGL) on Thar coal mining block II. The equity
ratio of the project is 40:60 while the agreement in this effect
has been reached in a meeting on June 1.

First
ever industrial policy soon: Wattoo;
Federal Minister for Industries and Production Mian Manzoor Ahmed
Wattoo has said that government is working on a first ever comprehensive
Industrial policy for the promotion of industrial sector. The
minister addressing the business community at Islamabad Chamber
of Commerce and Industry
said the policy will be formulated in consultation with all stakeholders
accommodating their views and suggestions.

Lanka to multiply bilateral trade;
Pakistan and Sri Lanka bilateral trade should be enhanced by identifying
more potential products and effective utilizing of FTA between
both countries. This was jointly expressed by President, Karachi
Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Anjum Nisar and Consul General
of Sri Lanka V.S. Sidath Kumar in the 3rd meeting of Diplomatic
Affairs Sub-Committee-KCCI.

Trade
leader paints grim picture of economy;
Domestic market is shrinking on a fast pace which is a serious
threat to the stability of Pakistan and contracting domestic trade
is rendering millions jobless, which will add to the economic
sufferings of masses who are already under pressure due to high
inflation, lawlessness and uncertainty. This was stated by trade
leader Malik Sohail VP NTA, President Traders Welfare Association
(TWA) Blue Area and former SVP, Islamabad Chamber of Commerce
and Industry. "No new jobs are being created and almost all
enterprises are shedding jobs to survive," he said adding,
"in such a scenario qualified and jobless youth cannot be
offered jobs, which is igniting negative tendencies.
